MDGs

The Millennium Declaration represents the common vi¬sion of the members of the United Nations for a peaceful, prosperous and just world. The Declaration outlines a wide range of commitments in human rights, governance and democracy. The Millennium Development Goals are a global project, applying to every country in the world. It is important that they are adapted for each country to reflect what is plausible and attainable in that country. Uzbekistan has a set of concrete and realistic national MDG targets and time bound indicators that apply to the Uzbek context. For additional information www.un.uz 

Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan is a landlocked country stretching 1500 km west-to-east and 1000 km north-to-south, sharing borders with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Afghanistan. The climate is continental and relatively dry, with low rainfall, long hot summers and mild winters. The country has significant reserves of natural resources including large deposits of gold, copper, lead, zinc, uranium, natural gas and oil. It has the largest population of the five Central Asian Republics, recorded at 25.5 million in 2003, of which 77.2% are Uzbek, with the remainder being Russians, Tajiks, Kazakhs, Karakalpaks and Tatars. New enterprise by women and for women

 New sewing workshop launched in Chimbay district of Karakalpakstan on May 11, 2011 created 15 additional workplaces for unemployed young women, thus, contributing to the wellbeing of their families and positively impacting on improvement of living standards in the region.

Eight families with TB patients provided with livestock for financial support

10 May 2011

 On April 28, 2011 UNDP/UNV “Empowering Communities through Local Volunteerism to address Poverty and Tuberculosis” (TB) Project handed over eight cows with calves to eight families with TB patients to help them successfully complete treatment and ensure the families have stable income. The event took place in Muynak, Shomanay, Karauzyak, and Nukus districts.

 During April 18-20 of 2011, the Area Based Development (ABD) project jointly with the Council of Ministers of Karakalpakstan and the Academy of State and Social Construction (ASSC) conducted training for the government representatives of the regional Ministries and Khokimyats of Karakalpakstan.

Collaboration will give fruit in combating TB

12 April 2011

 Today forces of the following international organizations are directed for TB control in Karakalpakstan: UNDP, WHO, MSF, Global Fund, International Red Cross, and Red Crescent Society. In Takhtakupir and Karauzyak districts activities on opening a new project of DOTS +, which aims to assist in the treatment of resistant forms of TB is completed. The project is expanding to Kegeily, Nukus, Khodjeily Districts and Takhyatash City.
